“So,” she said, her face hot, “I guess I’m not your type. You get off on being a white knight, and I don’t need one. Not everyone has to be in a relationship to feel good about themselves. Some people are better off on their own.”

This story hit all my emotional buttons and kept me up late (or early) to finish it. Bullies, PTSD, clingy ex-wives, loving but annoying sisters, and a slow ride to true love. The 4th installment in Kristan Higgins, Blue Heron series, In Your Dreams, is emotionally riveting, slapstick funny, and at times very heartbreaking.
First love is hard to forget, even if he turns into a jerk, in Em’s case.  Emmaline is still recovering from the crushing breakup of her childhood sweetheart, (3 years later), when she receives an invitation to his wedding to the fitness guru he left her for. She can’t NOT go when her entire family was invited.  Jack, the all-around good guy of Manningsport, NY, is the number one suggestion of a guest to take with her to the wedding weekend.  He’s all in, in order to get out of the spotlight, in which a daring rescue had thrust him.

Emmaline and Jack’s unconventional romance was realistically genuine. Higgin’s created tangible characters. Emmaline is, on one hand, a coolly confident cop, and on the other an emotionally charged woman. Jack, for all his “goodness”, can be a real ass, even when he’s trying to do the nice
thing most of the time.

From the Book Jacket

Everyone loves Jack Holland, but Emmaline Neal needs him.

Her ex-fiancĂ© is getting married in Malibu and, obviously, she can’t go to the wedding alone. In Manningsport, New York, tall, blond and gorgeous Jack Holland is practically a cottage industry when it comes to rescuing desperate women. He knows the drill, Em figures, so he won’t get the wrong idea.

What Jack needs is an excuse to leave town. Ever since rescuing four teenagers from a car wreck, he’s been hailed as a hero and the attention is making him itchy, especially since his too-pretty ex-wife is back, angling for a reunion. He’s always liked Emmaline. She needs a weekend date? No problem.

So when they wind up in bed together, Em chalks it up to red wine and chocolate cake, just one impulsive night not to be repeated. But Jack’s pushing for more, and if she lets down her guard, either she’ll get her heart crushed again, or discover that Jack’s worth more than just dreaming about.
